If you’re paying attention and understand American history, you will know that at this time in this country that’s a message that must not be diluted by other well-meaning slogans.

Once upon a time, a white policeman lie beaten and half dead along side the road. A young black man noticed, knelt beside the policeman, bound up his wounds and carried him to a clinic. Take care of him, said the black man. I’ll pay whatever it costs.

On Sunday, July 4, 1976, the bi-centennial of our nation, I was 28 years old, one day short of 29. On that day I stood here for the first time as the 18th installed minister to serve this church since its founding in 1743.

Once upon a time Jesus received a summons to a Roman centurion’s home. Which raised the question: to go or not to go. There were many reasons not to go. After all, aiding a Roman was aiding and abetting the enemy. Treason.
