Ministries

Welcoming All

We welcome all people regardless of age, race, ability, sexual orientation, marital status, social class, religious affiliation or none. We understand hospitality to be central to a life of faith. We aspire to practice the radical inclusion that is at the heart of Jesus’ life and teaching. We are committed to the movement to full inclusion and equality in church and society for all people including our LGBTQ brothers and sisters. We are also building bridges to those of different racial, ethnic and religious backgrounds. We understand faith as trust in the power of Love rather than intellectual assent to beliefs. We welcome questions as precious tools of the human quest for meaning and doubt as essential to a healthy spiritual life.

Serving the World

There are many ways to reach out and touch the world with love. SPC participates in a variety of local, national and international efforts, providing presence, prayer and financial support. Local partnerships include the Good Shepherd Interfaith Volunteer Caregivers, Jefferson County Community Ministry (food pantry; emergency financial assistance), Martinsburg Union Rescue Mission and the Shenandoah Women’s Center. We have also cultivated relationships through mission trips and financial support with the Coalfield Development Corporation in Wayne County, WV and the VERBO church in Bluefield, Nicaragua, among others. Through the agencies of our national church (PCUSA) we reach all around the world with educational, medical and developmental ministries.

Social Justice

SPC social justice focuses on racial justice, LGBTQIA+ rights, and support for immigrants, refugees and asylum seekers. We connect the dots of racial injustice and LGBTQIA+ rights with immigration rights and our commitment to More Light Presbyterians. More Light is a network of churches and campus groups working toward full inclusion for LGBTQIA+ people and provides a community framework for our social justice work. Together, we are the Social Justice Committee, the Immigrant and Refugee Support Committee, and More Light Presbyterians.
