FROM THE IMMIGRANT AND REFUGEE SUPPORT (IRSC) COMMITTEE--HELPING AFGHAN REFUGEES

The committee has been very busy with the influx of Afghans, Ukrainians, Central Americans and other refugees and asylum seekers. Coming to the United States for any reason is complicated and just getting here is not the end of what surely has been a frightening journey. Most have fled from war, violence, poverty and the effects of climate change. Many have nothing and, depending on immigration status, little from our government in the way of support. They rely on humanitarian assistance for their survival, even now.
The committee continues to identify different families who have specific needs and if you are able to contribute to that support, your generosity is always appreciated. Please read about these folks in need below. You can help by sending money for a specific need or any amount to SPC by check (please put IRSC in the Memo line) or the SPC website using the GIVE icon.

HERE ARE THE FAMILIES AND INDIVIDUALS WHO COULD USE YOUR HELP:

"H" Family in Pittsburgh:
Out of their family of 7 people, 5 were medical doctors in Afghanistan.
· Daughter A is a recent medical school graduate. She's going to apply to the University of Pittsburgh's Physician Assistant program. The application fee to apply to the CASPA website is $175. Would anyone be interested in sponsoring her application fee?
· Daughter N was a dentist in Afghanistan and wants to get certified to become a Dental Hygienist. The application fee to apply to the program is $55. She would also have to take an English test to prove her language skills to apply. The cheapest test option is called the DuoLingo exam and is around $50 to take the test. Can you help?
· The family could really benefit from a computer and printer which could be purchased for about $500.

The "G" Family from Afghanistan now in Chicago:
· The family just moved into their apartment in Chicago and desperately needs items like bedding, large pots/pans for the kitchen, and a sofa. IRSC would purchase gift cards to help them.

The "M" Family from Afghanistan now in Fairfax
· This large family that has found a home in Annandale, VA. They will need furniture, new clothes, shoes and school supplies for the children. Right now the committee would send gift cards--if transportation can be arranged, furniture donations may be accepted.
Wahab is a young professional Afghan man trying to keep his contract job and could benefit from a used car. He is being homed by a family in Frederick. If you have a lead on a free used car, please email: SocialJusticeSPC@gmail.com
